Austrian maternity passport: every appointment from your due date
The Austrian maternity passport schedules five medical examinations during pregnancy, alongside ultrasound scans, midwife consultations and conversations – under an expanded programme since 1 October 2026. From your due date this produces the list with concrete time windows; each examination has a window of several weeks, not a fixed day. Downloadable as a calendar file (.ics).
What the maternity passport is – and what it is worth
Since January 2024 it has officially been called the Eltern-Kind-Pass (parent-child passport); almost everyone still says Mutter-Kind-Pass. Since 1 October 2026 a new programme applies: five medical examinations during pregnancy, four ultrasound scans, two midwife consultations, a health conversation and an examination at a GP practice – plus the examinations for the child up to school age.
The financial side is not a detail: without the five medical examinations documented within their windows, the child care benefit is reduced. That is why the window matters more than the exact date – an examination two weeks late is still worth something medically, but not administratively. The voluntary appointments have no bearing on the benefit.
What changed on 1 October 2026: the Eltern-Kind-Pass examination programme regulation replaced the rules of 2002. New are an examination at a GP practice, a health conversation about psychosocial pressures, a second midwife consultation and a fourth ultrasound before the birth; several windows have shifted. The regulation also applies to pregnancies that began before that date. The move to electronic record-keeping is still under way – for the time being the paper passport remains in use.
The three appointments people most often ask about
The glucose tolerance test (24th–28th week)
Come fasting, allow about two hours: a fasting measurement, then 75 g of glucose to drink, then two more measurements. Because it takes that long, the test is done by appointment at a laboratory, and some GPs offer it as well – not at this practice. An abnormal result is not a disaster – four out of five women with gestational diabetes manage with dietary changes alone.
The organ scan (18th–22nd week)
The most thorough scan of the whole pregnancy: heart, brain, spine, abdominal wall, kidneys, limbs, amniotic fluid and the position of the placenta. Bring time – it often takes 45 minutes or more.
The midwife consultation (14th–20th week)
One hour, free of charge, and voluntary since October 2026. Take it anyway: it is the most detailed conversation of the entire pregnancy, and a second one follows between the 24th and 34th week.

It works with averages. Your body does not. The result is a starting point for a conversation, not a finding – and it cannot see what an examination would show.
