Coils and IUDs

Hormonal coil, copper coil and gold coil in detail: size, how long they last, their effect on bleeding, what they cost and how the insertion appointment goes.

Five coils are inserted at this practice: the three hormonal coils Jaydess, Kyleena and Mirena, plus the copper and the gold coil. They sit in the same place and are similarly reliable – what sets them apart is their effect on bleeding. The hormonal coil makes periods lighter, and in one woman in five they stop altogether; the copper coil leaves the cycle unchanged, and periods often become heavier.

The procedure takes two appointments. The first is for the consultation and pre-examination: history, ultrasound, wet mount and swabs. At the second the coil is inserted – a few minutes, ideally at the end of or just after a period. A check follows after four to six weeks, then yearly. After a birth we wait twelve weeks.

The costs are all-in prices for the insertion appointment including the coil: 500 euros for Jaydess and the copper coil, 600 for Kyleena and the gold coil, 750 for Mirena; the consultation beforehand is 250 euros. All five are listed with size, lifespan and cost per year in the IUD comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Does insertion hurt?

Briefly and sharply at the moment the tube passes the cervix, then a dragging pain like strong period pain that eases over a few hours. A painkiller an hour beforehand makes sense. How strong it is depends considerably on preparation and time.

Hormonal coil or copper coil?

If what bothers you most is using hormones, choose copper. If what bothers you most is your bleeding, choose the hormonal coil. If you want both, you have to weigh two aims against each other – that is what the consultation is for.

How long can a coil stay in?

Jaydess three years, Kyleena, the copper and the gold coil five, Mirena up to eight. After that it is exchanged or removed – in a single appointment. Fertility returns immediately.
